Renault Brewing Joins Dongfeng Nissan New Laguna in September

On the day before the auto show media, Xu Ping, general manager of Dongfeng Motor, told reporters about Renault’s joint venture and raised a word: Renault and Dongfeng will eventually enter into a joint venture. At the auto show, Ghosn, President of the Nissan Renault Alliance, responded that Dongfeng and Renault are negotiating and the “Golden Triangle” plan formulated that year has been restarted.

Restart the "Golden Triangle" Plan

Five years ago, Dongfeng, Nissan, and Renault developed a three-party joint "Golden Triangle" plan that has not been implemented for various reasons. During the auto show, Ghosn, president of the Nissan Renault Alliance, revealed that after five years, the "Golden Triangle" plan has been restarted. He said that Renault is restarting negotiations with Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. Renault sedan has been determined to introduce domestic production. "The discussions and negotiations with Dongfeng are continuing and there is no final result at the moment," said Ghosn.

For the specific timetable for Renault’s entry into the Dongfeng-Nissan JV, Ghosn did not disclose it. "But there are two things that can be basically confirmed. First, Renault sedan will definitely come to China, Renault commercial vehicles will also be the same; second, Renault will still only work with Dongfeng." Ghosn said, "But both parties hope to complete as soon as possible. Renault relies heavily on the Chinese market. In the first three months of this year, the US market has fallen by nearly 20%, and Japan is also declining. However, the Chinese passenger vehicle market still has a high growth rate of 22%."

President transferred to reveal

In fact, the transfer of the former CEO of Nissan China to Renault’s global vice president has sent Renault’s domestic signals.

Nissan Kakamura, former president of Nissan China, presided over the last Dongfeng Co., Ltd. employee meeting on April 1 and returned to the headquarters of Japan on April 2. On May 5th, Nakamura Kaji will go to Paris to take office. “Not long afterwards, I will return to China again and at the same time, it will also bring about the future development of Renault’s joint venture projects in China,” Nakamura said before she left China.

It is understood that Nakamura, who was promoted to Renault Automotive Executive Vice President, will lead the Renoir Non-Management Committee and become a member of the Renault Group Executive Committee. He will be responsible for the expansion of Renault Automotive's Asia Pacific market and the African market.

Analysts said that in the second half of this year, Dongfeng and the Nissan Renault Alliance will reach a framework agreement. According to the current situation, Renault's entry into the Dongfeng Nissan joint venture has basically been confirmed. The remaining biggest issue is where the production base is located.

Previously Renault’s domestic abortion was due in large part to Renault’s desire to place its production base at Dongfeng Nissan’s main Huadu site in Guangzhou, where there is a very good component system, and Dongfeng and the Wuhan municipal government hope to put the production base on Wuhan. "The end result may be a compromise between the two sides, both sides have a production base, but the focus is different." Dongfeng insiders said.

New Laguna listed in September

Renault will focus on the sales of imported cars before it is made domestically. For this year’s Renault’s new product plan, Reno’s Vice President of Asia and Africa, Goscar, said that the new Laguna, the first in Asia for this auto show, will be launched in September this year. In addition, the new Megana 2.0L manual version will be introduced in China in May this year. Renault currently sells four models in China, including Megane, Megane CC, MPV landscape and Laguna.
